Bio Systems shortlisted for an Excellence in Supply Award

The finalists have been announced for this year’s NHS in the North Excellence in Supply Awards and we are delighted to announce that Stericycle has been shortlisted in the Innovation category. The award judges said they had a tough job scoring this year and have commended the high quality of entries, so to be shortlisted is a fantastic achievement.

The awards recognise the work of businesses, third sector bodies and the NHS in working together to provide excellent patient care. They are open to any business which supplies goods, works or services to NHS trusts in the North of England.

Stericycle was shortlisted for its Bio Systems sharps management service with the Northern Care Alliance NHS Group.

Bio Systems provides reusable sharps containers that are collected, emptied, washed, disinfected and resupplied to the trusts. Stericycle’s containers can be used up to 600 times, as opposed to traditional methods of incinerating single-use containers. The service has enhanced the way waste management work is carried out, particularly at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, increasing its efficiency whilst minimising the impact on the environment and realising benefits for the trust, staff and patients.

The NHS in the North Excellence in Supply Awards are hosted by the NHS Supply Chain Northern Customer Board and organised by the Innovation Agency.

Mick Guymer, Chair of the Northern Customer Board, said: “The Excellence in Supply Awards are our opportunity to recognise and celebrate some of the pioneering collaborations between suppliers and the NHS which are having a real impact on the quality of patient care in the North.”

Dr Liz Mear, Chief Executive of the Innovation Agency, said: “Excellence in supply is integral to good quality healthcare, and NHS trusts in our region have established ground-breaking initiatives through excellent relationships with organisations large and small. I look forward to celebrating their successes.”

The awards will take place on the evening of Thursday 17th October at The Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds.

The last six months have been a remarkable time for Stericycle and the Bio Systems sharps management service having already received awards at the HSJ Partnership Awards and the Let’s Recycle Awards where we respectively won the Clinical Support Service award and Best Use of Design and Technology in a Waste Management Facility Award.
