University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust

Leading the Way in Sustainable Waste Segregation

University Hospital Southampton (UHS) has developed a scalable blueprint to improve clinical waste segregation across its six sites.

With over 13,000 staff and a wide range of specialisms, the trust faced challenges in spreading awareness and ensuring consistent segregation practices. In partnership with Stericycle, UHS launched a trust-wide initiative that included waste and sustainability champions, a real-time auditing tool, and face-to-face training aligned to HTM 07-01.

The programme has driven measurable results:

  • 96% compliance in theatres
  • 33% rise in reusable sharps use, reducing CO₂ emissions
  • 250+ trained waste champions and a dedicated audit team

UHS is now rolling out the blueprint to other departments, embedding ownership, education, and continuous improvement across the trust.
