University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust

Mobilising a Trust Wide Clinical Waste Partnership

University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust has brought four hospital sites together under a single clinical waste partnership, supporting a clear zero to landfill commitment while strengthening compliance, safety and sustainability.

Operating across acute and emergency care settings, the trust faced the challenge of maintaining consistent waste segregation standards alongside a high turnover of clinical staff. In partnership with Stericycle, the trust mobilised an end to end clinical waste service supported by on site audits, face to face training and ongoing engagement with clinical and operational teams.

The partnership is already delivering positive change across the trust, with clearer segregation practices, increased confidence in compliance and greater consistency between sites. Embedded eLearning, regular audits and hands on support have helped build understanding, ownership and continuous improvement at ward level.

Looking ahead, the trust is exploring further opportunities to reduce waste volumes, lower carbon emissions and deliver long term financial and environmental value through reusable sharps systems and continued education.
