No single treatment option is optimal for all waste streams, because they each have very different risk profiles and regulations. It is important to identify and stream your waste correctly in order to avoid harm to people or the environment - and to avoid the risk of fines.
In England and Wales the mixing of waste streams is prohibited by law, and is considered best practice in Scotland. To facilitate the correct management and segregation of healthcare waste we use the Department of Health Colour-coded Segregation System, which segregates waste on the basis of classification and suitability of treatment and disposal options.
When segregating waste you must consider both the appropriate waste stream and the appropriate packaging.
