Stericycle opens its largest European alternative treatment plant in Telford

Mar 2, 2021

We are pleased to announce the opening of Stericycle’s new plant in Telford, Shropshire.

The site is staffed by over 60 people and will increase the speed, efficiency and sustainability of the waste processing that we currently undertake.

The sustainable clinical waste management processing plant will help manage the unprecedented quantities of healthcare waste generated across the country, including vaccination needles, PPE and hospital waste created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Telford plant uses the latest technologies to steam treat clinical waste, which is then used as a fuel for power generation and other industrial processes. Crucially this also reduces the amount of waste that is sent to landfill for disposal.

We already operate 19 healthcare waste management sites across the UK, collecting and processing waste from more than 500 NHS sites.

Our UK Commercial Director, James Cardwell-Moore said of the Telford opening:

“As a company focused on safeguarding the world around us, we continue to invest in modernising our facilities with the latest innovative technologies to support the NHS and other healthcare customers across the UK. Stericycle is proud to play an essential role in mitigating the spread of COVID-19 by removing potentially infectious clinical waste safely and disposing of it in an environmentally responsible and sustainable way”.

James Cardwell-Moore added: “The pandemic has resulted in unprecedented volumes of clinical waste across the UK health system, which includes personal protective equipment, gowns, gauze, needles, IVs, and much more. We are now proud to support the vaccination programme, helping to make sure the waste generated by the biggest immunisation drive in NHS history is disposed of safely.”

Simon Clarke, Managing Director of Birmingham Hospitals Alliance (BHA) Shared Procurement Services, which will be benefitting from the new plant coming on stream said: “The Trust has a strong partnership with Stericycle, and they have supported us through the COVID pandemic. We welcome the investment made in their new facility at Telford, which will create additional network capacity to benefit NHS customers.”
