What is veterinary waste?

Veterinary waste refers to any type of clinical waste generated by the practice of veterinary medicine, including used medical supplies, body fluids, and materials that may have meet hazardous substances.

Proper management of veterinary waste is important for the safety of those handling it and for the protection of the environment and public health. This often involves specialised equipment, trained personnel, and compliance with local regulations.

The main types of veterinary waste

There are several main types of veterinary waste, these can include:

Sharps waste

This category includes used needles, syringes, and other medical instruments that are sharp or potentially puncturing.

Body fluids and tissues

This includes veterinary waste such as blood, urine and other bodily fluids and tissues that may have meet infectious agents or other hazardous substances.

Chemical and pharmaceutical waste

This category includes waste such as unused or expired medications, as well as chemicals used in the cleaning and sterilisation of medical equipment.

The proper management of these different types of veterinary waste is important to help prevent the spread of infectious diseases and protect the health and safety of people, animals and the environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Compliant waste management is critical in the protection of people, the environment and our communities.

Poor waste management exposes employees, waste handlers and the community to infections, toxic effects and injuries. Such as air, water pollution, disease and needle stick injuries.

Failure to correctly segregate, store, transport and treat healthcare waste can result in pollution, prosecution, fines and bad publicity.

In England and Wales the mixing of waste streams is prohibited by law - the waste producer is legally required to correctly segregate, label, package and store their waste. In Scotland it is considered best practice.

The national colour-coded segregation system identifies and segregates waste on the basis of waste classification and suitability of treatment/disposal options.

When segregating waste you must consider both the appropriate waste stream (colour coding) and the appropriate packaging.
